My Family

There are 26 of us.  And never has history put 26 girls together who could get along.  Until now.  We are the greatest exception.  Somehow, I was lucky enough to gain 25 sisters... And a second mom.

And they are beautiful.  They are stunning, kinda, phenomenal, hard-working, lovely, inspirational, wonderful, and every other  positive adjective that has ever been created.

We're different.  We come from all kinds of backgrounds.  Our skin, hair and eyes don't match.  But we are the same in the most important ways.  We love each other. And that counts for everything.  I will do whatever it takes to make them smile and realize their importance.  Because that's what family does for each other.  We deal with the tough things and we get through it... together.  Because of this- even those of us that come from not-so-great homes- know that we are not alone.

I choose my family.  I choose them.

And as much as some of them say I've changed their lives, I hope they know that they've changed mine more.  Because they kept me alive when I could not.  And for that, I am eternally grateful and forever blessed.  They have shown me that people don't have to be blood-related to be the best family anyone could ask for.

It Is A Skirt

Every time I wear a skirt
I get compliments
“Oh, you look so nice today!”
Thanks but no thanks

I promise you
That it took 1/3
Of the effort to put on this skirt
Than it would’ve taken to put on jeans

Why do I look nicer or cuter
When you can see
My knee cap?
(And I haven’t shaved my legs in 2 days, by the way)

I didn’t wear
My pretty coral skirt
For you or your compliments
I wore it for me

Because I felt like it
Because it makes me feel good
I couldn’t care less
How you feel about my apparel

And I’m also ready for war
I walk the halls of my school
Daring an administrator
To comment on my outfit

I am more than prepared
For this fight
Because it needs to happen
It just does

Our school systems
Need to be told that
Their dress codes are
Pro-rape-culture

If a teacher says
That my skirt isn’t “school appropriate”
Because it is “distracting”
My response is ready to go

“Excuse me for wearing
What I feel like wearing
And the boys and men in this building
Can’t handle it

They can see my knee
And my lower leg
How is it my fault if
They’re pervish enough to be turned on by that?

Teach boys not to rape
Don’t teach girls to cover themselves to avoid it
And it may seem extreme
But this is what your rules are implying

My leg being visible
Instead of being hidden by fabric
Should not
Make you uncomfortable

Why are you so offended
By your own anatomy?
Let me wear
What I want to wear

Without sly comments
On how hot I look
Or lectures on how
I broke your stupid dress code”

It is a skirt
A piece of clothing
And I like it
So deal with it
